Acorn Foundation celebrates over $20M in distributions to the community

Recognised as a leader among New Zealand's community foundations, Acorn Foundation has reached a significant milestone, surpassing $20 million in total distributions to the Western Bay of Plenty community since its founding in 2003.

This achievement stems from the collective generosity of more than 700 local donors whose contributions have created a lasting legacy in the region.

"Small acts of giving can make a big difference, and the Acorn Foundation is living proof of that," says CEO Lori Luke. "Our donors' contributions have ranged from $10 to substantial estates, and we value each and every donation. Through our foundation, these donors enable meaningful, collective impact that is transforming our community."

The foundation's unique perpetual model ensures donations are invested, with the returns distributed annually to causes that matter most to the community. "This multi-generational approach truly has a lasting impact," Luke explains. "Donors can address the needs of today while also supporting the community of tomorrow."

Acorn donors can either establish endowments in their will or choose to experience their philanthropy in action by supporting charities or causes close to their hearts or by establishing scholarships and awards during their lifetime.

The foundation's first endowment came from the late Edna Brown in 2003—marking the first personal endowment fund in the Community Foundations of Aotearoa New Zealand network. Remarkably, this fund has now distributed more than the original gift amount while growing its capital base by nearly 50%.

"Edna’s fund supports medical treatment or conditions that affect locals in our region," says Luke. "Her fund has supported improved well-being in the region, reaching 14 different organisations."

In the 21 years since that inaugural fund, Acorn has distributed more than $20 million to the community, including $3.2 million in 2024 alone.

These funds have supported hundreds of charitable organisations vital to the region's well-being, addressing wide-ranging causes such as food security, elder care, youth development,  environmental preservation and cultural heritage.

"Acorn’s ability to support to this region is thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our donors," Luke says. "We welcome anyone who would like to join this growing community of givers who are helping build a stronger Western Bay of Plenty—forever."
