Tauranga Boys' College Trust Garth Sim Centurion Scholarship

Tauranga Boys' College Trust Garth Sim Centurion Scholarship

The Garth Sim Centurion Scholarship was established by the Old Boys' Association in 2014 to honour Garth's 100th birthday, with the Association funding the first few years of the Award.  The Scholarship is awarded annually to the top academic achiever in Year 12.  When Garth passed away in 2017 at age 102, the Sim family asked that donations be made to the Scholarship fund as a way of honouring Garth's life and enough money for approx. 6 years of Scholarships was raised.

A generous donation from the Robertson family, made in September 2022, will allow the Garth Sim Centurion Scholarship to continue. “We have recently chosen to share some of our business and life success with the next generations in the schools that undoubtedly helped form our character and kindle our ambitions. At TBC we are forward funding the Garth Sim Centurion Scholarship with an invested donation. Luck happens when you recognise opportunity, work hard and take calculated risks!"

The Garth Sim Centurion Scholarship is awarded annually to a Tauranga Boys' College student worth $1,500. Applications are via Tauranga Boys' College.

About Garth Sim

Former Tauranga Boys’ College Principal, Garth Sim lived through two World Wars, the 1918 'flu epidemic and the Great Depression. Born in 1914 on a Waikaka sheep-run in West Otago, the Sim family moved north when Garth secured the top job at Tauranga Boys' College, starting in 1959. As the new headmaster, Garth worked tirelessly to recruit and train high-calibre staff and gave the students a simple mantra: "All that is expected of any boy is his very best at all times,". He was married to his wife Nen for 77 years.
